High School Registration and Certification

There are 3 requirements that you must complete to be certified as a High School Referee:

1.     Register by signing in and paying the registration fee

a.      Registration for new officials AND returning officials is done via this website:
https://whistleapp.vhsl.org/
NOTE: You must be at least 18 years of age or a high school graduate to register to officiate contests in the interscholastic program. (Exception: A high school junior or senior who is at least 16 years of age may register with an association, but may only officiate contests below the high school level.
NOTE: During the registration process make sure you indicate “Peninsula” when it asks for your association IF you plan to register with PSOA. There is a fee.

2.     Attend a VHSL Rules Clinic

a.      Rules clinics for both officials and coaches for spring sports will "most likely" be on-line. (powerpoint video presentation about 40 minutes long) You must click on and sit through one of these clinics as it is mandatory to officiate for the VHSL during the 2022 season.
Don Samuel will put out additional information when the on-line clinic is available.

3.     Take the High School Soccer Referee Exam on-line

a.      Online testing should become available sometime in Jan-Feb.  Look for “Soccer Exam 2021-2022" We will send out another e-mail when that test is available.

b.      Test is “Open Book”

c.       Scores (this may be off slightly)

                                                     i.     A minimum score of 75% is required for assignment to regular season varsity games.

ii.     A minimum score of 85% is required for post-season eligibility.

      • If you get below an 85% you can take the test again (for free) to improve onyour previous score to qualify for post-season games. (Note: if you get an 85 or above you are a winner and locked out from re-taking the test just for the heck of it)

4.     Atten the NFHS "Inplicit Bias" Video Clinic

Additional information will be provided as we receive it. There are deadline dates for this requirements and we will pass them along to you as well as update this page.
